But before I do, answer me one question. If I now said that after crushing my vines, I velcro them up the sides of tall trees to get my sets extra high, you still wouldn't get I'm putting-on the growers who are trying to bully me off the site again? There is good advice about not believing everyone we read. But only because some growers are nice to me, even when I thought I was a loon, the following most important secret for growing for size is for them.
Follow me on this imaginary tour of a growers patch. It's 6 weeks after transplanting and his plants have leaves the size of elephant ears and vines as thick as a roll of dimes. This grower all ready has ruined his chances as a record setting season.
How? Because what he did was, he gave his transplants a "kick-off" with a starter fert. Which is the same as giving them room service and they've remained small and fueled all their energy in producing heavy top growth. Which we are obviously looking at.
Next we go into another growers patch and his plants are much smaller and lighter. How is a house built? Not from the roof down, but the ground up. You notice he's placed his fert in a band around the hill. His plants roots are being forced to go looking for their food source down here around the bottom of the hill. And these long roots will become a massive root system, capable of drawing up huge amounts of water. The only thing that can pack on a lot of weight and size.
I say I grow for beauty and shape. I stop my pumpkins from growing to 1000 lbs. 2 weeks after I transplant them, I fert them and stop root growth to produce a 500 lb. pumpkin or so.
There's a lot of information on this site that is outdated, inaccurate and misguided and practiced by most. But I am a Bozo and I am an idiot? Fine, I'm a Bozo and an idiot, now everyone go and grow their personal best.

since i don't have any trees in my patch. i should be able to get some pretty cheap fake christmas trees. i won't have to worry about having as many bugs with the fake trees, especially the pine beatles.
