Wanted to let everyone know that I haven't been hiding from their questions about Pumpkin Link. Just haven't been on the thread latley. To answer the fair questions and for those who have an actual stake in it, the data on Pumpkin Link came from kind growers who shared the data with me. In at least one case from a group president. For those who would ask where the rest of the growers got their data from I couldn't say for sure, but what I can say is that in at least one case I didn't put up a large spread sheet of data because it looked to me like it came from a source that I didn't feel comfortable using. I didn't know for sure if it came from that source, but it just looked that way to me. I feel very comfortable in saying that none of the data that is on the site came from the aggc.
I appreciate many of the comments and recommendations that have been made about the site. It has helped steer the direction that Pumpkin Link will go that I think will benefit the most growers if they want to use it. My plan is to still have a small charge in the future (I'm thinking $2.99 per year). This will cover my costs (I'm unemployed right now which is part of the reason I've had time to take on this project) and the verifiable name from the credit card will be part of a member's profile and used to track who is entering new listings and editing existing data. That will help insure that there is integrity and accuracy by those who are entering data. Charging $2.99 certainly is not to make money. It doesn’t take much math to figure out that no venture capital firm would fund this project. Certainly doesn’t cover the physiatrist bills from the depression I’ve suffered from the whipping on this board. lol

If you have a legitimate stake in this please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns. Otherwise I don’t feek the need to take this thread any farther. Just wanted people to know where I'm coming from and understand everyone has their opinion. I hope everyone grows a big one in 2009.

Jamie I wouldn't put too much into the whipping. I also know you spent a lot of time compiling the data, which you requested from growers, including myself. Your intentions are great, and if any of the peanut gallery(lack of a better term) don't like what your doing, they don't have to join. I myself have a membership with the AGGC, and I will join yours also. Benifits are, 2 sites are better than one, As I'm sure you have pumpkin info the Aggc does not and visa versa, And for all the people that have no access to the Aggc, this will be blessing for them, I have a question? will the site have info on pumpkins under 500 pounds, if the info is made availably to you Eddy

i really wouldnt worry about the comments from other growers.all this talk about copyright laws is a bunch of bs.there are a lot of people with too much time on their hands.i dont even have the time to do the research, maybe thats why i grow small pumpkins compared to the monster growers.i thought growing was suppose to be fun.just keep up what you are doing and ignore everything else.

Jamie, Some people have their cheerios pee'd in from time to time. Thus crabby and cranky. Who cares.
Your only posting public information that others sent you. Its not like anyone copyrighted a name or title of a specific seed.
This argument comes up every year and it really is silly. Another site that people can access will be very valuable.
I lost my right to use the AGGC years ago because I refused to give information on 1 pumpkin that I grew that was not an atlantic giant, nor were any of the parents in the database. I submitted dozens if not hundreds of pumpkins and pictures over the years from all others of my pumpkins along with a far more complete picture of the genetics from the 1980's.
Back before I was attached to a significant other, I collected data on thousands of pumpkins via weighoffs and results, seed packets, emails, and phone calls. I stopped that many years ago during college. BP.com does a very good job at having most of the info now. My only complaint would be that the spelling, and numbers need scrubbed for higher accuracy, which is exactly what your doing.
Keep on the good work.
I would suggest you add links to separate based on year grown, and perhaps even weight increments to break down the data into more manageable lists. I'll be happy to pay for your service as I would any service.

nothiong wrong with free enterprise. no one has to buy the product if they choose not to.
the key is to provide something new or different that people will have a need and desire to purchase. fair value for merchandise delivered.

keep up the great work jamie. i would be glad to pay the $2.99 for the service. there are many out there that applaud your effort to make a site open for all willing to pay. i believe there are plenty of growers with keen eyes and a good sense of the genetics that will correct you via email if there is a statistical inaccurracy. together we will help you make sure the integrity of the data is intact. and as far as the whipping, you gotta have thick skin to grow giant pumpkins. the moans and groans from rocking the boat a bit are nothing compared to that feeling from a BES discovery on a big'n. hopefully your skin has some 1041.5 genes in it. nice work. shazzy

Jamie, Ignore the people that have nothing but negative things to say!! I think what you are doing is great for the sport of growing AG's. When it comes to having multiple research sites that is for the better, Competition is part what makes things better!!
I don't know who brought up a possible lawsuit, but that is total BS!! This information is public information nobody owns this information!!
Just keep adding more features, pictures of pumpkins, and detailed data. Then who knows, soon enough the same people bashing might just be using your site.
Have a good one.

I guess I did you wrong by questioning where you got the data from Jamie, from all the responses before this one it obviously came from respectable and free resources.
I wish you and your research site all the best.
If you should ever want my data I would be happy to give it to you.
best wishes, owen

Jamie has shown lots of energy relating to the growth of our hobby. I have had many a conversation with him and the young man bleeds orange. He has lots of talent, great ideas and he is not afraid to put those ideas into motion for the benefit others in the hobby. Countless hours of his own time spent for the benefit of others to ponder and enjoy. Keep up the great work Jamie, don't let others zap your flow of energy. There will always be those who disagree or have the need to be contrary. IF they dont like, dont read it. But dont let them stop your energy or your dreams to succeed or help others.
