Please tell me now. Is this a misery loves company website. Some growers are so miserable, they come on the site to find someone they can take it out on? When someone grow a 1400 lber. this season and doesn't grow more than a 600 lber. for the next few seasons, all he or she can do is speculate along with the rest of us as to why. No other growing has that problem. You set up control plants and know for sure it was the fert, the weather, the watering, the pruning. Here, 2 seeds from the same pumpkin can vary wildly as plants. All we can do is speculate. I'm still wondering how Jeff L grew an 801 lber. and Knollner a 681 lber., he harvested on Aug. 20th, both with no crowns. Anyone care to speculate as opposed to insult me for speculating myself? I can only speculate on why some growers are so miserable, they feel such a need to come on the site and insult, even though they were asked nicely a few times now to refrain from doing that. I've had growers e-mail me and try to assure me it's just their insecurity showing. I wish those growers would tell me now. Are they like that in their daily lives? They seem awfully mean spirited and I'm happy they're showing their true colors, if that's how they are.

Jack, I am not the most "in the know" guy, but disagree w/your statement of "all he or she can do is speculate"...there are other things you can do than just "speculate"!! Soil & tissue samples are a couple of possibilities. Peace, Wayne PS...I agree that 2 seeds from the same pumpkin can vary wildly, but that has been an accepted idea for quite some time.

The 801 and 681 are examples of how much secondary roots contribute to the overall weight. I would speculate that if the crowns had not become diseased they could have grown to much higher weights.

Hey Jack, just out of curiosity - who is this mystery grower, or growers that have grown 1400lb pumpkins followed by by less than 600lb for several seasons? And they are simply speculating as to why?
You seem like a nice enough guy, and i am sure you are well intended. I would like to give you a couple things that might be worth considering. I am relatively new to growing giant pumpkins. I have grown for 3 seasons. I have put in countless hours in the patch, and spent many hours reading, thinking, watching, listening, building relationships, making friends and genuinely trying to understand and enjoy the process of growing I have had pretty reasonable success and have put up respectable weights and have enjoyed every moment of it. Constantly trying to understand of the plant, the science of soil, and many many other factors that contribute to successful growing. I feel very much like someone who is new and learning.

Is that what you are trying to achieve Jack? If that is what you seek, you will find that here. I have read everyone of your posts -as a matter of fact, I have read almost every post in this category this winter. Why? because i am fascinated by the information and i enjoy the personality of the people who write. Including yours. However, your posts read like they are written without much concern for factual information or experience. You frankly talk about pumpkin growing like someone who has very little experience with actual pumpkin growing. Your posts read like self-entertaining rants. Reread your last post for instance. What is the actual question? If misery loves company, or if anyone can explain your invented 1440lb question. Hey, if it is just all in fun... then carry on my man... touch those keys, rant, rave, laugh, I'll read you, but don't ask me to take your half-thought out opinions seriously, and don't be surprised when people - who have actually put in lots of time and work, and countless hours trying to gain a deeper understanding of growing and each other feel a little put off by your arrogance and self-proclaimed knowledge. Hell, i'll keep reading you, and if i ever get a chance to meet you - that is if you actually exist - I'll be happy to buy you a beer and share thoughts with you. I guess I'm saying try being a bit more self reflective and humble. Ask some real questions, not just rhetorical ones, that simply expand your own thoughts. with love Rod

This post makes no sence at all, he goes from a Movie Misery,, then to why two seeds dont grow the same,, then to a 1400 and 600lb pumpkin????

Leave the little giant alone. He only wants to see his thoughts in print. Why else would anyone keep posting with commentary geared to get a reaction from its readers? I get a kick outta the way he trys to bait everyone into a debate.Helps pass the long winter days. Its time we heard from Big Dave The Hammer Hampton.Id bet he has something to offeron the subject?
