From my experience, not very often. The only seed I ever got that was damaged was the 1233 Reiss. I have seeds come to me from all over the world. If that seed still has the radicle tip and a little of the cots, it will grow.

depending on which way it was broken, it still should germinate. I broke a bunch of seeds in half(across the cotyledon) and still had 100% germination.
Such a problem should have no long term impact on the health of the plant or pumpkin

I had one notable situation happen with me, and it happened to be the 1233 Reiss. The bubble pack arrived with a big crease down the middle, as if it had been folded in half by the mail handling equipment. Inside, the radicle tip had been crushed. I don't think it could have been more perfectly destroyed if one had wanted to do such a thing.
Seeds are tough. They're made so that they can take a lot of abuse, moisture, freezing, whatever, but when conditions are right they'll germinate. (As long as the radicle isn't crushed and removed from the rest of the seed.)

My first "real" seeds came crushed...a pair of 1010MacKenzies and 1092 Burkes from Pumpkinfest in 1999. I had a 998 Pukos come mashed beyond growability and just last week a 1028Johnson* came cracked in half. My 1233 reiss was crushed and a couple others...it happens way to often...

The tip of the 1269 is pretty smashed, I'll give it a try anyways, see if I can get it to germ. My marrow seeds I recieved got pretty smashed up also but they are a much softer seed.

Where the tip was damaged I have not had germination! I have lost 5 or 6 seeds to the mail cancellation!

Please email me at [email protected] with your address & I will get another 2 - 1269 Hunt seeds out to you. Thanks for considering it for next season. Take care.

If you ship seeds in a bubble pac, ask the attendant to hand cancel the package, that way it shouldn't have to go the machine that pulverizes seeds...good luck!

I have only had one seed damaged, but it was by my dog, he hates the mail man and when the mail comes through the slot he grabs/bites it and shakes it lol.
We now have a mail box on the outside of the house. :->
