I am new to growing giant pumpkins and it seems growers go to great detail in growing giant pumpkins. These small details seem to making a great difference in geting pumpkins to the scales. I was wondering how many growers plant by the moon signs? By the way good days for planting in May for above ground crops: 1st-8th, and 24th-31st.

We had snow on May 12th in 2004, and a sudden snap the night of May 11th 2008. When you don't have an accurate calendar and other things to go by, you used the season turnings as marked by the celestial calendar. These days I trust in Weather Channel, my weather diary, hotkaps, 3 liter soda bottles full of water inside the kaps, and heatlamps in the spring. I set by when I want my harvest, counting back.
I know the solunar calendar works good for fishing.... but I haven't seen one of those calendars in years, with the best fishing/fishfeeding times on it.
I also know I'll have to push my weather to get the growth I need when I need it.
That first window might finish you in mid October if that's what weighoff you're going to is scheduled. Here we have an early schedule so we will be pushing it close to a month against our spring frost date.
If you grow in a hoop house/greenhouse then you can plant when you want.

Chances are the sign is there for a reason, more then likely its a keep off property sign, so, there is always that chance that someone will walk right up and stand on your pumpkin growing area, moon signs, if it says, astrology on it, sure enough some moon watching astologer will come up and plant his telescope right on it, so, from this 3rd year grower, far from the signs.
