I am dedicating my season in honor of my dad who passed away a few weeks ago. I plan to go all out on a couple of the best seeds I have. The problem is, what two seeds give my best chance at growing a new PB ? I have some of the hottest seeds available, except a 1068 Wallace or 998 Pukos. I would like peoples opinions on what two seeds they would plant to go all out on. I will be planting eight plants so I can plant more than two proven ones, but I want to plant at least four of my own seeds. Please give me some ideas. Thanks in advance. Steve Z

Steve, It's a touching gesture that you're dedicating your season in honor of your father. So hopefully we can give you some good suggestions, so you can grow a huge pumpkin or pumpkins. Here's some seeds I'd consider: 1385 Jutras...had a great first season out! 1161 McKie...produced a 1521.5 and 1208 1350.5 Starr....this one seems under the radar so far. Produced 1528 and 1234.

If I would have the possibility to choose, I would take 1041 Mckie and 985 Werner.
Good luck Steve for a new personal best in honor of your father!

I say do it on one of your own seeds, an even better reward. Give your 674 a good spot.

The 1385 Jutras and 1207 Young had the most reported progeny so I guess thats what most most people thought would do best last year.

I did a little research a few weeks ago and the following are the top seeds that produced in the 2008 season. Any of these seeds would give you a good start:
275 Van Hook 904 Stelts 985 Werner 1041 Mckie 1058.5 Timm 1119 McMullen 1123 Gervais 1161 Rodonis 1178 Lovelace 1207 Young 1231 Pukos 1272 Hilstolsky 1363 Werner 1370 Rose 1385 Jutrus 1408.5 Daletas 1446 Werner 1462 Gibson 1502 Wallace 1537 Stelts 1556 Rodonis 1689 Jutras
Of course there are a number of other good seeds that didn't see a lot of dirt this last year like the 1350.5 Starr and the 1010 Daletas that we should see some big pumpkins from again this year. Best of luck to you in 2009!

I will be planting my 646 (1420 Larue x 998 Pukos)for sure. Andy,it will be a toss up between the 674, 1042,711,624,479 and a 219 est. to fill the other 4 spots in my patch. the 479 (1385 Jutras x 1420 Larue) just won't get out of my head. I might give it a good go. Joe,the 624 (1385 Jutras x 1348 Hester) could be a great one also.I also have the 219 est (1385 Jutras x 1248 Ford) all three of the 1385 pumpkins came off the same plant. Keep the ideas coming.

I too have dedicated my season to my mother in law whom during this last growing season passed away at age 65 from pancreatic issuesand was gone in a matter of a couple days. The one thing that sticks in my mind is that when my daughter set the fair record for jrs at 1016 she was right there and was one of my daughters biggest cheer leaders. So I know what it is like to have that piece of your life missing. I too have dedicated this next year to her and I agree with Andy's suggestion to grow your best seed and give it the best spot. and use your other seeds as a show stopping cross that can been grown year after year. Good luck my friend

Any seed that Quinn Warner has grown, all his pumpkins are in the 12-1,500 pound range (AND HE'S GROWN ABOUT 7 IN THE LAST YEAR), grown off different seeds, so yuh know the seeds are fine, then you just have to worry about the soil, and what the heck, its a special ocasion, why not splurge a little on amendments, extra good fish emulsion, sea weed, micrcorrihizal, anything that suits your fancy, or a lotta of good beer.

Steve- this is what I would do ... a) 4 of your own. That's great! b) The 1-2 that have produced the highest weights period (dmg not included), c) The 1-2 that have produced the highest average top 5-10 average weights. d) If you have 1-2 that you just really like and have a gut feeling about - the go with them - if not take 2 each from b) and c). I grew the 1408 Daletas this way, this year- and even though it split on me it was fun to grow and produced the biggest pumpkin I have ever grown.
