I'm planning on doing round two of a soil and soil-less seed starting mix study and need your recipies. What I'm looking for is the best soil (or soil-less) potting mixes that you have used to start your plant in. They can be either the store bought varieties or your own secret mixes. I did this same study last spring and will post results from both studies for all to see at the conclusion of the study.

in 2007 102 out of 120 plants germinated in this mixture.....1 part potting soil, 1 part sand, 1 part coffee grounds, 1 part peat, and 1 part composted manure in a 4" peat pot..

I sand my seeds from 1/16" from tip all around to within 1/16" on the other side. Put sanded seed in sandwhich bag and blow in warm moist air by mouth. Put in chamber that maintains a 80 to 90 degree temperature for 5 days and plant point down after 5 days in starting mix described above at a depth of 2 inches. Starting mixture should be moist but not wet and should be in a heat controlled chamber which will maintain a 80-90 degree temperature!

It has served me well.

I sprout outside the dirt, then once it has put out a rootlet, go to a commercial nursery potting mix, BM-1, that has been soaked for at least 24 hours and put up in a cut side gallon nursery pot (tape up the side cuts) lined with newspaper. They like 85F for sprout and start, so the sprout box is kept at that and after, I have a place on greenhouse bench that stays about that temp plus sun for the start.
