I have seen posts here in past years about schools with gardens that grow pumpkins. I was talking to my son's teacher, and she is interested in do this. If you have a teacher doing this, would you please send me their contact info. Also, I'm curious how the summer break is handled. Do we end up tending the plant, or do the students / teacher remain involved.

Thanks,

Matt Wickless

Hey Matt I have worked with 2 grade schools here the last 2 years. The kids and parents setup a schedule for the summer, they are responsible for the weeks they sign up for. I have helped with doing the schedules and spreading the work load. I also did a couple of sessions with each group doing a "how to", put in a couple mornings helping with pollinations.

The fun in seeing the kids preparing the area and getting involved is well worth it. True reward comes in the fall when they have actually HAD fruit, nothing huge but thier own 2-300lbrs really brings out the smiles.

email me for any info or questions,
Dan Bowles

I know Tremor did this too...I'm trying to work out a similar deal for an inside courtyard...which means the maintenance guys have to take care of it...no way of leaving a pumpkin plant outside with all the deer and woodchuck.

Our school's garden is safely contained inside the school by the exterior walls of one entire wing. The janitorial staff knows the routine & keeps a door open for deliveries & such. Provided we can finish our work by 3:30PM (Union rules) they don't mind our maintenance visits. Spraying milk once a week for Powdery Mildew has never been a temperature concern even on hot days. We make no other chemical treatments which means an early & fruitless season some years.
