The largest concentrations of juglone and hydrojuglone (converted to juglone by sensitive plants) occur in the walnut’s buds, nut hulls, and roots.Plants will yellow, wilt and die

Some plants can take it though they say. But I would not try it.

basically black walnuts have a chemical in them that inhibits other plants from growing ... it's a self defence sort of thing. bad idea!

Black walnut trees tend to supress everything within 80 feet (mature tree). Aka grass/lawn grows lousy to not at all and any other plantings will have problems. They made a dye of black walnut hulls and that is about the only use I could think of for hulls. Best to keep anything black walnut away from anywhere you want to grow something.

We have several black walnut trees growing on our property.
The tall fescue, orchard grass and bermuda grass lawn we have seems to grow perfectly fine in and around our walnuts as well as our other trees (white oak, yellow poplar, black gum, sourwood, red maple, black cherry, apple, peach)
Some plants grow just fine around walnuts. Not sure about pumpkins though

Most of our trees are mature trees as well we let grow up naturally
Also Japanese stiltgrass (an invasive) grows very well in the shade of walnuts
