O.k I ahve one 460 squre foot patch. Till just i couple of minutes ago I thought I could only grow one plant. Then I thought it might work if I grew two and just grew the secondaries up a realy sturdy tellis. What do you think about this idea. There arn't any places around hear where I could grow pumpkins.
Thanl you to anybody that reponds.

No, you need the secondaries to root in and feed the pumpkins growth.

They might be able to feed that way if you put liquid fertilizer on them directly, however I think they'd be missing out on what's in the ground in your patch. I say better to have one good plant than two okay ones.
Maybe try to grow two plants and get creative with your secondary arranging. Usually the secondaries after the pumpkin don't grow a whole lot anyway.

Google-vertical pumpkin growing.
if you can stack tubes/etc of good soil, you may get somewhere. Just remember the drunkards motto: "if yer on the ground,ya can not fall down";)

I tried last year. They climbed sunflowers, but was too tough to manage and I don't think it was worth it.
