Last night as I was letting my dog in the house and as she past me at the door I smelled this awful smell, after about 1 second that she was in the house I knew right away that she got into it with a skunk! But by that time it was to late, she was already in the house stinking it up like nobody's business! For just that short 3 to 5 seconds that she was in the house, and then for me to get her back outside, she has now stunk this house up for eternity!
Here's the million dollar question,,,,,How do I get this smell off my buddy and out of my house now!,,LOL. I think the only way is to blow my house up and then rebuild a new one, lol! I tried washing my dog in tomato juice and that didn't work, and I also tried vinegar and that definitely didn't work, you ever smell vinegar mixed with a strong skunk smell?, whewww weeeee! that made it 10 times worse, lol. Anyone run into trying to get rid of a skunk smell before,, and if so, how did ya do it!!?,,,LOL

Brooks, I got sprayed once by the dreaded skunk and used tomato juice, you have to let it set for a while before you rinse it off. The smell stayed with me in my nose for days..good luck.

Never had that problem, I would shave the dog, then give it a steak bone.

Brooks, Here is a recipe that uses peroxide in the mix. It has worked many times on family pets around here. It will bleach the dogs hair some but it will almost completely remove the stink with a couple washes. You can use it on walls and stuff too if the dog touched anything before you got it outside. Just test the surface for color fastness before you do a large area. Good Luck, Jesse and Kelly

Same thing happened to my dog. I used ketchup, then my shampoo. It worked very well on both of them. I didn't wash my dogs snout, because I didn't want to get anything in his eyes, but his snout was the only thing that still stunk.

We came back from vacation with the smell filling our house. You've got to wash everything, the curtains, the towels, the pillows, etc... especially if you dog rubbed on these. We opened the windows for two days and it went away.

Lil patch got it right. Using tomato juice is like using milk for your pumpkin.
Pet stores sell it too.

I own a keeshond, and this is how it's done:
1 quart hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup baking soda 1 tsp liquid soap (like dawn)
put the soda in a glass pitcher, add about 1/4 of the peroxide and stir up, then add the rest and the soap and stir again. With dog wet start pouring this on and work it in. You will be able to tell where you've been. After a good workin, rinse off the dog. This will do 1 40-50# keeshond or an 80-90# lab. As for the house, febreeze spray everything. That will take it out. All the dog has to do is walk past something with that smell and it picks it up.
I keep the ingredients for this on hand and when I have to make a batch up, I buy more.
Dog won't be 100% but if she sneaks into bed with you your eyes won't water after a scrub with that stuff.

I have used the peroxide, baking soda, soap mixture several times and it works like a charm. The key is only mix it when your ready to use it (there is no shelf life) and use warm water to wash with. It helps cut through the oils.

Yes, as Moe Joe said and I forgot to mention, mix it right before you use it and use it immediately. Usually my hubby will wet the dog down as I mix, then I get to work the goop in then he rinses. While he rinses and does the towel thing, I go febreeze the whole route the dog took. Average is once a year, we had one spring of five times within a month. It will also take racoon funk off your dog.
