Could just be too much water uptake and no place to go. My started to do this when i dead headed all my vines on the same day...

Can be I have had a circle of my drip watering sistem around the stump, this is a lesson Thanks Sergio

There is a number of reasons that can cause a stump to rot and foam. Every stump that I have ever seen stinks and is rotting - the foam generally smells like sweet fermented vegetable matter. My experience is that more often than not - saturated subsoil or a stump split has been the cause. However - there are all sorts of diseases that can cause the stump to become unhealthy -thereby it starts to foam. i think the foam is not part of the initial problem or disease - rather a symptom of a rotting stump. Just my thoughts...
