Rye is a cover crop that has the dual effect of reducing weeds in your garden area after you have harvested or incorperated the rye into your soil!

We use a mix of 60% Winter rye, 30% Austrian peas, and 10% Hairy vetch. The Rye gets about 7' tall and adds tons of bio mass into the soil when plowed down the following fall.

I like buckwheat for a summer cover crop. You can till it under in about 4 weeks, and plant several crops of it during the summer. Then in the fall I would plant the winter rye and let it grow as a winter cover crop. Lots of weed control and organic material between those two.
