Takes lots of practice, lots of luck, and lots of reading in the off season. Fertilizers are also a big key, and soil prep in the Fall. Those books are awesome, I read most of them in the off season, and used them again as reference points several times this season.

Find a grower that lives near by you, you can ask him all kinds of questions, maybe visit the growers patch.

I would start with a soil test. University of Massachusetts has one on their website for $15. Best investment ever. Post it on the website and ask for input. Get some seeds from seed swap. Very easy, send SASE bubble pack to the offerer. Purchase How to Grow Giant Pumpkins 1,2 and or 3 or get them from your library. Also join a club and get all the support you could imagine.

Ask for help. Identify the problems you are having and plan out how to fix them with advise from some people that you respect on BP.com or a grower that is in your area. spend some time and money on your patch. don't wait until Spring. Now is more important than next year.

Pumpkin Farm

Going Green

Had soil test last fall and the guy said that my soil was outstanding....that it would grow anything! I grew 14' 6" corn, 14' 8" sunflowers, 1 pound beets, 1.5-1.75 Tomatos, 29 pound muskmelon, outstanding potatoes, grewat flowers etc. But it would not grow great pumpkins until I talked with the garden center and they said buy a box of Purex powder laundry detergent and sprinkle it oin 5000 sq ft garden and water it!. Vines doubled in size, leaves tripled in size, and previous pumpkins grew to 100 pounds....since apply Purex my pumpkins weighed 66 pounds in 10 days and over 100 in 15 days! The Purex allows better penetration of the soil and the soap on the leaves cleans them of grime and allows for better photsynthesis!
