262 Ketelsen (1362 Poirier x self) has been picked. Real slow cold year for pumpkins, and I have had no growth for 8 days.
There were no cracks or defects that penetrated into the pumpkin, but I am wondering if it will keep until Halloween, or should I hack into it and start saving the seeds?
I pollinated on the 27th of July, so there should be some good seeds? I have had terrible luck saving my own seeds, and this is my third year.

keep it dry and cool. Place it in the garage or better yet in the basement if you have one. [email protected]

do your best to keep it in dry place till halloween if you see any signs of soft spots or mold then you will have to cut it open. to save the seeds just spread them out flat on a cookie sheet and put them in a open air place to dry for 2-4weeks, i usualy put mine ontop of the cabinets where they are out of the way. once the seeds are dry scuff the dried stuff off of them and then you can store em in a container. goodluck and happy halloween

Why do you have to keep them away from cats?

I dry mine out in the basement on an old screen. I also run a dehumidifier. I haven't had any trouble yet. -Jeremy

Every time we dry seeds our cats lurk in the shadows and attempt to pounce on them, chew them, and bat them around like they're catnip mice. Of course, maybe we just have weird cats...
Either way we have to banish them from the basement this time of year as we have a setup very similar to what Jeremy described. It works great, sometimes we add a small fan as well.
