I was wondering what exacly the pumpkin leaf does? Do the leaves supply any nutrients. Can nutrients from the ground be taken directly to the fruit and skip the leaves. I know that plants use the energy from the sun that they get through there leaves but can you greatly reduce the number of leaves to increas the nutrients that the plant gets out of the ground?

The aforementioned sites are great to help you understand the function of leaves, but the actual number of leaves required to grow a big one has been a much-debated topic here on BP.com.
The key is keeping the plant disease-free throughout the season. Several growers have grown 1000+-pounders on as little as 350 sq. ft., making sure that everything else is ideal.
