Assuming i cant make it to a weigh off, where is a good place (with a scale that is big enough) to weigh a pumpkin. I may not be able to make the local weigh off but would like to find out how much it weighs (a bet is riding on it). I am in the Chicago area if that makes any difference.

I used to weigh my split one at a local scrap metal recycling center. certified platform scales, same as weighoffs use.

Weigh off in Stoughton is the week following your local club weigh off Dave if scheduling would work better. It provides the IL growers another site to weigh fruit and meet growers. Great location for all of the upper midwest.

go to your local waste facility or transfer station with your truck or trailer empty, go home and put the pumpkin on and go get weigh again. you will get a slip each time and just figure out the difference.

Beware of 'stock chute scales' as they are only accurate to nearest 20#

Andy:
Are you talking about a scrap recycling center where you drive a vehicle on the scales, dump your whatever and drive back across the scales empty of whatever?

Dave, there is a weigh off at Didier's Farm, in Prairie View, Illinois on October 4th, or for an earlier weigh off, there is one at Hensler's Nursery, in Hamlet, Indiana, on Sept.27th.

I am going to use a truck scale as well, at a local forest products yard, if I can't make it to a weight off. The scale is certified every year and was just done a week or two ago. It weighs to within 5 lbs accuracy. I'd make sure to check as to what kind of accuracy any large scale you chose are verified to, some may only get within 20 or more lbs.

Most scrap yards have a smaller scale section for those who pull in with copper, aluminum, brass etc. There you have to offload into bins or dollies and then roll up to a certified scale...not those car/truck scales.

the one i used is a non-ferrous center, they buy mostly aluminum, brass, copper, ect. since they're buying based on weight, they have to have their scales certified by the county weights & measures guy. they have 3 sets of 4x4 platform scales, the same ones that all the weighoffs use. except the recycling place rounds to the even pound instead of .5

Thanks for the replys. I know of the didier weigh off and i only live 15-20 minutes away but Saturday mornings are very busy for me (3 young kids). I am trying to find a way to get there but i dont know. I also have a recycling center where you can drive you car on a scale. I may inquire about that one. It is about 2 miles away.

Dave, how are you planning on lifting and moving them? I checked Prairie View on map and it's 60 miles from me. Don't know how I can get them there safely.

Deb, I have a pumpkin lifting tarp now from P and p seeds. It should be more than enough to lift what i have (which is close to 300lbs). Unfortunately there are no packing plants but there are plenty of recycling plants.
