Today my nephew Aidan came by to see the pumpkins. Put a picture up with him and my largest in my diary. Should be up later or tomorrow. We took a walk to the patch and he saw one of my little blue pumpkins and said,"that's huge." I said "oh yeah! Look at that one!" and pointed behind him. The kid almost had a stroke. He was laughing and oohing and ahhing. He almost fell into the vines he was so amazed. Not that I am breaking any records, only in the 300# area somewhere, but the kid had never seen a pumpkin that big before and to see him get so happy really made me take a deep breath and just think about how amazing kids really are. Since I don't have any of my own to share the joy of pumkin growing with, to share it with him was awesome. Now that my fingers hurt,, Just figured I would share that joyful experience with you all.

It was my then 2 year old son who started it all for me here. After laboroing all summer & seeing our 40 & 50 lb Prizewinners he commented at a local farm; "Daddy, how come ours aren't that big?"

Though we're a bit older now, kids are still the main reason I do this.

It's a wonderful experience to share with children. My dad taught us to grow indian corn and gourds which we sold in front of our house from a stand made of 2x4s. The street we lived on had one car go by every half hour. By the end of the day my brother and I would ride our bikes the five miles to the penny candy store as our reward for all the gardening work and sitting all day at our stand. It was a good life experience.

Alex was born on october 29th came home on the 31st. My sister who delivered him wrap him in a blanket and stuffed him in a pumpkin...that was our first picture of him out of the hospital. I've grown pumpkins ever since...like steve first prizewinners..the Big max..then I found a site for Dill's Atlantic Giants...whoa...I've been trying to grow one big enough to put him back in!..LOL...Every time I get a good one I drive it to the schools and let the kids get there pictures with it..Nothing better then seeing the smiles on all those faces. The thank you notes and pictures drawn of the pumpkin on the truck are priceless. I think we all still have a little kid in us, that's why we grow em.

I submitted the first picture of my son to the Denver Post to get some press for the Denver weigh-off and they contacted me today to say that they loved it so much that they want a higher res image.

Miika,
Luca is precious!
The proud look on his face couldn't be any better, even if the pumpkin were larger!
Keep having fun!.....Glenna

Kids always ask the best questions. I have had the local school kindergarten class stop by for years to look at my pumpkins when they are in front of the house -Most of them never new pumpkins can grow that big.

A few weeks ago I gave patch tour, and carried the 2 year old in as her mom was smaller than I was... and set her down next to my (then just) 400# one, it was bigger than she was, and to watch her meet a pumpkin that big... makes it worthwhile.

The gradeschool kids all think the poster of Joe Jutras and his 1689 is COOOOOL and they want one too (pumpkin, not poster). The enthusiasm! The magic.... kids are a GREAT reason to grow pumpkins so big they need their own area code!

My two biggest are at the county fair parked on the trailer in front of the door to the main building. A LOT of kids are meeting the biggest pumpkin they have ever seen this week! Even if the ribbons and weight cards got rained on tonight (just enough of a dribble to soggy things) it's great.

Arvada Boy, all the press you can get for free the better. Our local paper has had one or more of mine in the paper four times now. Kids and pumpkins are very popular images.

You want cute, Miika's #93329, 31 and 32, are a great set. Bet he grows up to beat ya. :)
