Do birdbath pumpkins tend to go light due to the bird bath area. My ott =380" on day 60. It is very wide and low. I have not seen any posted this year. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've got one going right now. Its in my diary around 450 lbs. I think the est. should be a little lighter than measured due to the fact theres a lot of mass missing due to being sunken that the measurements don't take into account. If it were normal that area would be filled in with pumpkin mass. But that still doesn't mean it won't weigh heavy, and if it does it could still equal and exceed the OTT est. weight.

And thats just my thoughts. Would like to hear what someone with more experience says too.

Over the years I have had a few of them. They have all gone light.

a lot depends on how your measuring.its impossible to get a standard style measurement.

i measure around the table ( the wides part around the bird bath)for a accurate circumference.( yes i know the stem is on the bottom of the fruit )

drop the tape to the ground in front ( just touching the soil ) pull the tape straight down the top of the fruit and over the blossom area and to the ground in the back. ( do not push the tape into the blossom hole

dito for the side to side measurement.

in other words it does not matter if its a bird bath ,table top, or a tea cup. you measure it just like it was a normal pumpkin ( as if the stem was running straight out of the front of the fruit )

it will go heavy or light to measurements depending on thickness just like a round or oblong fruit

Thanks pap for the reply. That is the way I have been measuring it. I will post some pictures soon.

milford, CT,

My theory is this...when taping ...symmetry is a factor..if a pumpin has areas that are not reflected in the volume of the pumpkin they will weigh "0". Irregular shaped pumpkins are difficult to measure.... soooo.. if the measurement doesn't truly reflect the volume of the actual pumpkin ....Yes ...it can weigh light to the chart. My point being... be reasonable and tape according to the actual shape of the pumpkin...If you tape the largest circumference and there is a large void in the surface of the pumpkin you are assuming that that area is pumpkin but it is really air. My point being....Light and heavy to the charts is sometimes deceiving if the pumpkin is a non-traditional shape. Mark
