Is it possible to graft additional rootstocks onto GPs to increase plant vigour This thought is prompted by some experience with grafting tomatoes

Yes, it is. I have experimented a bit with this in years past. I even tried grafting a watermelon onto AGP roots. It grew for several weeks in my basement. Here is one of my favourite links.
