I am going to attempt to make a tripod this year. What is the length of 4 x 4's everyone is using?

16' and followed Bart's instuctions. Works well for me,,tall fruit in the back of a 4x4 with no problems.

16' here also. i'd rather have it a little too tall than not enough. worked well even on the big truck w/ the lift.

thanks guys....any recommendations on hoist type and chain type? Do you use rebar or bolt?

Hmmm if a guy was to take 4" .188 square tube in 10" lengths Then weld it together in the configuration needed this would be slick...What do I know though

that's the one I have, but mine might be a 15 foot drop length, i can't remember.

i would recommend the one i use also. I went through a couple of the cheaper ones before i got this. seeing ball bearings dropping out of a chain hoist as you have a pumpkin dangling in the air is not a fun thing.

16' and a 1 ton chain hoist. details at http://www.team-pumpkin.org/ makes loading big pumpkins a simple one or 2 man job.

I use the same one Andy posted..think my 10ft long..always run out of hieght anyways...did buy cheaper one like harbour freight model ..never again,the chain links came apart and got stuck in the drum of hoist..buy good one it will last long time

I saw someones diary and they were using scaffolding, that seems like it could work well. Wouldn't have to dig spots in the lawn to prevent the tripod from sliding out. Plus they hold alot of weight, so that is not an issue.
Our local tool rental place charges $8 a section (5' tall) for 2 weeks. Plenty of time to load, go to weighoff, and unload. 2 sections would give a good height. Get a beam, put across the top, good to go.
