I have a genereic seed that is taped 171 two days ago. The problem is that it is getting very orange. How long can I keep it on the vine? Does it matter? I would hate to cut it off now. I was kind of hoping to give it to my nephew for a giant jack-o-lantern. Any ideas?

do you shade it?

put a sheet over it but it may be too late.

As long as it's showing measurable growth, it should be just fine. I agree with Jeremy, shade it...if you're not doing that. It may just be a very orange strain of A.G.

I do have it shaded. I have a white sheet over it leaving the blossom and stem ends uncovered to prevent rot. It is actually a BURPEE prize winner hybrid seed. One of two I have going besides my two Dill A.G. seeds. The other BURPEE seed is a little lighter shade of orange. Both are still showing gains, but the latter is taping about 24" more OTT than the first mentioned. It is two days younger as well.

Big, you would be surprised how long that pumpkin will last as long as you keep it on the vine, I have had a lot of the smaller varieties and AG's quit growing at this time of the year and they have lasted well past October.

Keep it off the soil...Out of the Sun...Away from Frost...Wipe it down once or twice a week with a bleach solutution..I can last way beyond halloween.

Thanks for the tips. It is off the soil, shaded, but the only thing I have not done is wipe it down. Will start this procedure tomorrow!
