I am new to giant pumpkins and a baby deer left prints in the sand next to my 267 pound pumpkin along with a tiny nibble.I plan to prevent this from happening again but wanted to know what I could put on the nibble to prevent rotting or whatever was coming next?

I have a fungacide called copper that I have been painting in my 222 pound with a stem split, can I use this or should I get captan?

I use Daconil straight from the bottle. If the nibbles are small enough, they will heal if just kept dry. I don't think copper would work for this.

Suzz, the deer will be back for another meal before long, and this time it will end your season if you aren't prepared. You better figure out how to protect your baby NOW!

Suzz, Some possible deer protection methods: Cover the pumpkin completely with a sheet or sheets. Anchor these so they don't blow off. Use some type of scent that is supposed to keep deer away. I think I heard that bars of soap may work. You could rig a type of fence around your pumpkin. Maybe put tall stakes around your pumpkin, and wrap fishing line every 6 inches from the ground up to the top of the stakes. Just some suggestions I thought of. Good luck!
