I have read about relieving a stem split that is on 2 sides of the stem, sorta like direct through the middle. The filet method I guess it is called.

What about one that has 3 splits, sorta like a triangle around the stem. How should I handle this one? I have a feeling that it is doomed, so if anyone has any experience with this I will try it.

I just posted 2 pictures in my diary, not sure when they will show up.

To give you more information if you can imagine the hands on a clock, the splits are approxiamtely 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. The 3 and 9 o'clock splits would be good to filet I think.

I put a flash light up to the splits and I believe I still have good amount of pumpkin left before it goes through.

Thanks again to anyone and everyone that gives me advice.

milford, CT,

Owen..I'm dealing with the same issue..mine are at 12:00 and 6:00. Mine are longer than the ones I saw you posted and are 1-1.5 inches deep. I dusted with captan using a bulb/pipette..and set up a fan on the stem. It's been 4 days and the wound hasn't progressed. I had one of these 2 years ago and wasn't able to slow it...This year so Far I think it is under control...keep it dry...apply captan..and hope it doesn't rain and then get sunny. I'm hoping that if she scars over I can get back in business. Just check really well to make sure that it hasn't breached the cavity..I know this is the thickest end but right at the stem they can get much deeper. Good luck!!! Mark

Thanks Mark, I will do what I can to keep it dry but we are having a very wet time right now.

At any rate, thank you for your response, it is much appreciated.

I had to deal with a lot of stem splits on my fruits on the 998 last year. Cutting the stem towards the vine seemed to relieve quite a bit of pressure from the split.

The fruits were all wheels and split open at 100 kg at the latest. And the growth then was simply too much for them.

I think with bigger fruits this might work well especially if it`s not a wheel with all the vertical growing pressure.

Might work, worth a try.

Good luck!

Doing it now myself on a wheel...rear end is dripping away...captan what I could..tarped it over...cleared the leaves for more ventilation and applied Zero-tol to entire area including sand...don't have much hope for her but thought I'd try..to much rain in the forcast if I could dry it our might have a shot....will try a fan on dry days. Good Luck Owen! GrowEmBig! Chuck

Owen, I can't tell from the picture that you posted but where did you cut the fruit. Did you make the splits larger or cut somewhere else.

Thanks/Glenn

Thanks for all the responses.

Dan, Jos- got your e-mails and am going to give it a try. I usually lose 2-3 of my pumpkins each year to either stem or blossom splits, this is the first time I have even tried to save one.

Glenn, as Dan said, toward the vine, the split got bigger over night were I cut it, but not deeper.

thanks again,
owen
