Please tell me how you have a STUMP on your pumpkin plant?
A 'STUMP' is the remains after felling a TREE!
Maybe you can call the remains of your pumpkin plant a stump 'AFTER' and only after you totally cut off the main vine at its base. Oh yea, then it would be Dead.
How about 'TRUNK' same number of letters and your plant is still Alive. Even Base will work.
OK so I don't like the term stump used in the pumpkin patch.

Save this kind of stuff for winter, when there is nothing better to discuss.

Thank you Jim! This is one of my pet peeves with our hobby too.
"BASAL CROWN" is the correct nomenclature. However "base" or "crown" are both acceptable.
Like Jim said; a stump is a dead tree.

Balto dragged a sled with a TRUNK, loaded with Serum & Milk to save the Pumpkins of Nome. The hit so many STUMPS along the snowy trail, that the constant jostling turned the Serum to MILK and the Milk to CHEESE. They injected the MILK to save the pumpkins. Then partied with the CHEESE at the Weigh Off. Hence the question always asked by non growers at weigh-offs.
Want some CHEESE???
And a "COLD ONE" THANKS!!

Me and my wife splurged at the shopping market the other day and bought some expensive cheese, it was like 10 dollars a pound (exp to me) and some summer sausage, along with some good crackers..you guessed it, I ate my meat, cheese & crackers and told my wife how good one of my pumpkins is growing....she gave me the backboard look..like, "are you done".
