I have some weed block that I want to use to lay underneath my pumpkins. Do I also need to add sand on top of this to allow the pumpkins to slide around? If so how much? Thanks

I would. It only needs to be a couple inches thick. How much you'll need depends on the shape and size of your pumpkin.

I prefer to put sand UNDER the fabric. The primary reason is that then I can use the fabric to help reposition the pumpkin as necessary and with the sand under it, it slides nicely even when the pumpkin is large. I also found the sand a bit abrasive and seemed to stick to everything. Each has their own way, but after trying both, I will always put the sand under the fabric.

I do it the opposite of Petman. I put the fabic flat on the ground. Then I put the sand on top of the fabric. I do this for two reasons. If you have a pumpkin with heavy ribbing I feel the sand goes up into the ribs to help support the fruit better. It also makes cleanup easy this way. Just pick up the fabric with the sand on it and dump it into something, you have sand that is still clean and can be reused.
