Has anyone ever analized the consecutive OTT measurements on a pumpkin. My theory is that once the pumpkin establishes its basic shape (say around day 30), the ratio of the OTT to the circumference will remain roughly the same. If this is the case, we would only need to do an OTT at day 30, calculate the ratio, then use circumference to get the next month or so of relatively accurate weight estimates. If it does not stay the same, perhaps we could re-measure the OTT and recalculate the ratio every few weeks. I figure this would be a time saver and a risk saver, since you aren't near that pumpkin as long to accidentally put a thumbnail in it or something.

On my fruits the ratio changes over time. Some do hold fairly true however, it mostly depends on the shape. I don't measure the OTT all the time any more, usually only every 5th and 7th days. I check the circumfrence just to make sure they're growing. I don't really worry about the estimated weights at this point in the season too much.

Pap, your head grows at the start of the season, then diminishes as you reallize all the problems in the patch...while your beer belly grows quicker. It's all a matter of ratios. (lol)

Gus is right pap. The head size is much larger in anticipation of a record-breaking year and, after the problems in the patch arise, the rate of alcohol consumption rises. What you lose in head size, you gain in belly size. I'm afraid your formula just won't work.

If you look in the book 'How to grow world clas Giant Pumpkins III', by Don Langevin, pages 162 to 165 you will find that he has conveniently already created a formula that does exactly what you are talking about. I cant post it here because for one its protected material and also its a bit complicated without the pages of explnation to go with it.

pap if you could measure your gut for the next couple of summers you could make a chart so us other beer drinkers would know what to expect our girth to be by the end of the growing season.

Glenn, Andy just linked me to this thread. Great idea. Our 975 Andrews* is the only thing worth taping so we'll see.
