most will plant annual winter ryr grass. it grows well during cooler weather ,stays somewhat green all winter, and makes a good green manure when tilled into the soil early spring.
if you looses a plant area or two during the season id plant annual rye grass during this summer ,then till it in and replant winter rye in the fall

You can also use Oats as a cover crop, very hardy in low temperatures, does well up here. any of your seed mills will have either, try your farm supply also.

I've been unable to find rye grass seed around here. I planted Barley this spring and Oats a couple of years ago. Steiner elevators here in Rexburg has both. I suspect purina plant off the yellowstone highway north of I.F. will have it.

I tried Dwarf Essex Rape as a cover crop last year, and it seemed to work out very well. My best plants are growing on that spot. It only costs around $1.40 a pound, and 5 pounds will cove an acre. You don't have to work in to the soil, just broadcast it and it grows. Makes good deer food plots as well.
