Has anyone experienced this and would this be a backfeeder to the pumpkin or a drain on energy to the fruit? I don't expect too many responses, but if anyone has any input I would be grateful. I can't afford any drains on growth this late in the season. My gut tells me leave it till Aug 1st before I make a decision to cull it or not.

Are you sure it's a secondary and not a leaf, I've had leafs growing out of the stem before. If it is a leaf it will probably abort, It lets air into the cavity, or at least I think thats what happens.

If it is indeed growing out of the stem...any potential backfeeding or help this secondary may give would not be worth the worry of splits and stem stress. I think it would just end up being more weight on an already overworked stem. IMHO.

I also had a stem that started growing fron the stem of a pupmkin. I cut mine immediately. However your thoughts on it possibly feeding the fruit have me kicking myself. I would problably have left it grow. The plant mine came from has ribbon vine or double stems and has a lot of abnormalities. From the ribbon vine I had two female flowers growing right across frow each other on the same vine and I was in hopes that the stems would merge together as they grew. I thought of curring into the flesh of both and putting them toghether to see if they would seal together but one of them started growing much faster than the other and I ended up culling it.
