Went out to the patch this morning and found that one of my plants has foaming stump rot. I did not think that would be an issue here bacause we have had vertually no rain in the last month. Then I had to proced to the grim task of cutting one of my pumpkins off the vine. It was not all that big yet(about the size of a basketball) but it was about 17-18 feet out on the main and the darn thing grew so fast that it blew right in half. Almost from stem to blossem end. I have never seen anything like that before. So all I am asking is that the gods give me a break(yah right).....Well atleast for a week or so. Who else has had a bad run this week???? Thank the lord it is the weekend

Only in whanging up my body so far, toes crossed.
Found an error last night while mudwrassling...um, mudgymnastics, trying to measure everything in patch, took 5.5# off my guesttimate plus added a day, but that's minor.
About to go claim third shower of day, it's being one of those.
Something did go chew the bleep out of one of my tomato plants, now that I FINALLY got something resembling a few ripe ones something came and madey snotty boogers out of them! dinglebling it! Tomorrow is garlic barrier and I'm looking up what zaps hornworms! (as that's what it looked like chowed down)

About this foaming stump rot. I have a spot that is kicking out white (powder white) substance from my vine near the stump. Can it be treated, can it be saved? This is on my 1502 plant, I have plenty of plant and all seems not affected at this time, but was wondering if I should do a captan paste or powder on it. I have also thought about doing some sort of bleach or peroxide treatment.. Manybe some Eagle 20EW? Suggestions?

My second set on the 1093 Hunt is starting to split on blossom end already. Have one more shot, but already late in the fruit setting game.
My 776 Hain is slowing a bit too, but that could be the weather.
My 1066 just won't set a fruit, so it will be pulled soon.
Bad powdery mildew at one site, but I think that should be under control soon.
All in all, happy with season so far. I guess you can't get through a season without some problems.
Grow em big!!!

The only hope for foaming in the stump is to take a knife and make a small hole at the base on the underside and drain the liquid out. Then, irrigate the stump with some hydrogen peroxide solution and apply some captan and pray. Keep rain off of the stump for the rest of the season.

I have also noticed when you trim those real fat lush suckers off the stump they can drip huge steady amounts of water for days escpeasialy if they are on the bottom of the vine just below the soil surface. Ironically enough I was seeing this was the wettest area of the plant... Right where you dont want the moisture.

I just finished digging out my stump area, letting it dry out. I found about 3 heads of lettuce, cabbage, and several young plants unkown to mankind. I will be putting a pic or 3 on my diary of what not to do when dealing with stumps.
A grower's first instinct is to put more soil on top of the stump area and water excessively to encourage more root growth. I have been doing this for years, only once having a problem with stump rot (foaming style). I have learned that this is not the way to handle the stump area, and hopefully I have rectified the problem. Larry's advice above is gospel so read it and learn from him. He is an AG GOD!!!
