Would a plant that lost its stump rely more on backfeeding? And if so, could you promote backfeeding by cutting the main at the stump.(In the last stage of fruitgrowt). Because the plant at the stump is oldest and after the fruit oviously the best in late season.

If the basal crown is lost then "yes", the source will feel the sink's pull from where ever it can. DICK wallace grew a 900+pounder a few years back on less than 200 sq ft of plant. Be kind to the source material that is left.

I actually blew a 1005 Miller up at about 30 days from back feeding. I lost the front part of the plant and allowed past to grow. as I started dead heading the new growth past the pumpkin She had incredible growth and split WIDE open at the belly button.
