with less and less response to those who need assistance.
until this year, no mater how obsurd or dumb of a question i would ask, people seemed to care and answer. i answer.. even if i dont know exactly what the real answer is. its about hope. giving it to those who need it. ive noticed that things are growing stale in the community. those who disagree are probably barrack obama supporters. well.. you got your change.. and its for the worse

And by the way roofer, there are millions of websites to express your political views, here we talk pumpkins. Not sure where you're coming from dude, might want to do some more reading on this page, maybe when you're sober. Not that being un-sober is bad, most of us like that too (note the number of beer cans as measuring points in the gallery). Lighten up buddy, good people here.

This happens a couple times a year usually. Someone makes this same post, just in different words each time. I agree to the extent that this seems to be the trend of American society in general.

This time of year I believe alot of growers are spending more time in the patch, alot more time outside pursuing other interests as well. And that you do see less posting this time of year because of those reasons, not because the place is going down hill.

Some people do have lifes that they try to get time in after pumpkins. That mean big pumpkins .com comes in last. You are such a self-centered idiot. You don't get what you want so you whine and blame other people and,!!!!DON'T THINK!!!!

Ans saying that obama supporter disagree is totally messed up. That dosn't have to do with anything. PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT THAT HAS DO WITH ANYTHING. YOU ARE JUST BEING STUPID!!! YOU JUST WANT MACAIN TO BE PRESIDENT. IF ANYTHING FERTILIZER PRICES WILL KEEP GO UP WITH ANY PRESIDENT. SO DON'T SAY OBAMA SUPPORTERS DISAGREE WITH YOU !!!!

Actually the "posters" here at BP come in waves. Newbs post questions freely but sometimes decide to start answering (regurgitating info) a little too soon (written memory versus experience).

There is danger in getting used to fast & accurate answers. Really experienced growers aren't sitting at their computers all day. Most have jobs. Then there's the hours in the patch. Then they might break bread with their family. At some point most folks check email every day - YIKES there's 2 questiojs from the club, 5 from the GPC Committtee, woops another from a vendor, 7 from customer, HEY! There's an order. If they can still keep their eyes open they might log onto BP where upon there could be 20 newbs needing help.

From my own stand point, the sheer number of new posts every day makes it impossibe to read them all....forget responding.

Major Q & A is best handled in the off-season. I tell customers the same thing. The day the dandelions bloom is not the day to shop herbicide prices & break chops looking for labels, rates & MSDS. Do that in January.

Likewise this is post-pollination season...Why are we still answer posts "what would you cross my XXX seed with?"

I have 15+ years experience in web development and one thing I keep coming back to that would be helpful on the site is if a tagging tool could be implemented. A poster or people with replies could tag their post with pre-selected keywords (much like you see on many blogs) which would allow users to see threads of answers from different posts on the same question. We all see the same posts over and over again and it would be nice if they were all grouped together via the tags. That would give a broader group of answers than the typical 2-3 that you usually see on a post and possibly better overall answers.

Steve,
With all due respect, some of us are still pollinating. Yesterday I pollinated one of my competition plants for the first time. I'm running about 3 weeks behind here on pollinations....a little frustrating to say the least....I agree with you on the rest of your post though.

as a grower of many seasons i can assure everyone that there are many growers who care and want to help support the new growers and the hobby itself.

however-it is quite concerning when growers ask and expect to learn everything from a to z via this web site.
the site is intended to further the hobby, share some info,
ask a question from time to time, possibly make a new friend or two.

anyone expecting to start with how do i plant mt seed questions and go all the way through to how do i tell which is the male and female flower questions really need to study the hobby first, read books on gardening, soil, nutrition, insects and disease, control, then attempt to grow a giant pumpkin.

it is for that reason that i promised the new and newer growers i would put a quickie how to book together for them this winter.

besides its true that many growers with the knowledge to really help dont read much less respond at this time of year, they are to busy working and managing their pumpkins and plants

be patient

pap

Roofer – People don’t come here for hope, they come for answers. You said “i answer.. even if i dont know exactly what the real answer is.” That’s the problem right there, you shouldn’t give an answer if you don’t know what your talking about.

I refrain from answering questions myself for the most part, even though I may have seen something in the course of doing research. maybe my first time research gave me faulty information. I also want to be able to ask lame questions. How do I do that if I am coming across as a pro, lol. And thanks again pap for your input.

Thank you, Tremor, for politely explaining the time crunch many growers experience this time of year. Your posts prove that tact hasn't gone the way of chivalry.

Jesse and I both work 45-50 hours a week. After family time we spend many many hours in the patch. When the sun goes down there's always household chores to be done. Some days we're lucky to get half a night's sleep. We are absolutely stretched to the limit time-wise, and we only have four plants...

And for anyone who somehow may not have noticed...Tremor, Pap, and many other experienced growers are on this site constantly. They spend a lot of their valuable time patiently answering questions. Most growers would be lost without them (and fail miserably). They should be recognized for the contributions they make, not berated because they don't have time to answer every single question.

Just my two cents...

Dear Mr giant pumpkin peep, I neither accused or blamed anyone of being or doing anything. I did not call anyone an idiot nor did I have to type my words in uppercase letters because I was so pissed and needed everyone to know so. I didn't accuse any one of not thinking. I simply stated that I felt the site, since first visiting four years ago, has grown a little stale. "to cool for school" if you will. You want to talk about busy. I wish I had as many hours as some to be working in my patch. I'm on a roof 8-10 hours a day. On estimates for another 2-3. Whenever the sky isn't raining i'm working in 120degree heat. The word weekend does not exist in my vocabulary, not cause I'm a square, but cause i need to work as much as i can before winter. Oh yeah, I love my life and job. Here is where you all are gonna get upset again,,, it is plain horse shit that people are too busy.. how the hell can all of you come out of the wood work and answer this post if your all so busy? The amount of effort spent in these responses could have been in answering the same boring, retorical questions many of us have. To the Mass man (where i grew up!) I disagree with you completely. I guess you are not able to read between the lines. Your post. Roofer – People don’t come here for hope, they come for answers. You said “i answer.. even if i dont know exactly what the real answer is.” That’s the problem right there, you shouldn’t give an answer if you don’t know what your talking about. Where did I say I gave people the wrong answers??????? I said even if I didnt know, I still responded. I would write something to the lost like,, "yeah i hear your pain buddy, "my plant has some fowl smelling odor too, wonder what we both got?" To clearify some more, hope is what people do need, especially if the people who really can help are to busy in their patch to write a two second email...

(CONT.) I wrote my original post after seeing the many ZERO responses to people in the beginners area and even in this area. I suppose some clever minded individual will speak up and debase this point of view but nonetheless my point is relevant. I love how some of you accuse me of being dependent or to accustomed to getting answers. This was not for me and if anyone of you can't see that now, I guess you all win then. Now,,, I'm guilty of something here for sure, my bringing politics into play and remark about OBAMA! The most likable man on the planet.I'm sorry that I couldn't help myself. Mr. giant peep, i applaud your ability to react to some things without thinking as well. i know you don't really hate me. in fact you don't even have to apologize. to the rest of you good luck and god speed!

Dear Roofer, my shortest day is 12 hours. My wife, God bless her has MS and is not able to help out much except ocassional misting on hot days. After doing laundry, cooking etc. I sneak into my patch and do what I can. Then I thank God for the many blessings bestowed upon me and my family. I think you should get off your soap box and count your blessings. And FYI- I'm Canadian, I vote conservative. Good luck this year.

Dear just a roofer....I was thinking when I replyed ...many of the things I wrote I took out before I posted. I DID THINK! I almost brought politics into it favoring one canidate but I deleted that part. So saying i didn't think is wrong. I thoguht about while writing it and my origanal writing was almost double the zize. I delted a lot out of it. Yes..I don't hate you just because anyone that is growing giant pumpkins can't be that bad.

On your comment about zero reply on new growers forum many of the quistions are reapeats, such as "10 day circumfrence" quistions.

I do not know how you don't understand that people don't have time. As everyone hear knows growing pumpkins is hard work. If you arn't tired after taking care of the patche at the end of the day you might want to go to the docter.
It is time consuming this time of year so people don't have time. Just because you find time dosn't maen other people find time. Now don't say I don't think because that is,WRONG!

Sincerly,
giant pumpkin peep

Let's put this to bed everyone, no good coming from this, and my kids don't need to be sitting on my lap sounding out words. Jeez, guys, get a grip, I feel like I'm at a highschool prom fighting over a girl.

Just a thought now that we have a long gourd thread, I propose a "compost pile" thread. In this thread we can rant and rave and talk bad. Thoughts?

That said, an email just went to the mods on this idea, and also to better moderate the content and members on this page, this is old IMHO and not welcome here. If it is, I'm in the wrong place and will find another.

Obivously you have seen my patch, the monster must be my Pumpkin patch, I walked up the other day (quietly) and to my amazment all my tools, shovels, buckets were actually floating circular around the pumpkins, and closer look revealed the pumpkins now levitate, close to a foot off the ground, I then figured it out, the pumpkins, they have there own gravity pull. The sky had kind of a swirling cloud look to it, like, like the sky was getting ready for another planet? I don't know, this fall could be exciting.
