I read that you should cover the roots to keep them dry. With all the rain lately I finally got out and covered my roots with pieces of painters tarp and put heavy rocks and dirt to keep them down. Now, my question is if I have them like this will moisture develope under and rot the roots after all??? and also how am I supposed to water and fert. them without uncovering them or am I supposed to do that and then cover them back up?? I saw a question about this and there was a sarcastic answer and it was not resolved in my mind. Or can you give me another way to do this. Thanks Danielle

i dont exactly know what you heard but it sounds just plain wrong. cover the roots/vines with your soil...... i understand about the "sarcastic" remarks. it seems there is alot of that going around here lately. take that shit off of your vines and roots.. hope to have helped

i cover my stumps about pollinating time thru rest of season to keep them dry simple 4 pieces of rebar and a plastic shallow tub like rubbermaid storage thing need air flow to stump so make it up a bit not on ground-maybe thats what you read

Thanks guys. I uncovered them and they seen ok. Suns supposed to come out tomorrow (thank god!!). Now I have another question I know I do that alot sorry but anyways, if I burry my vines what will happen if the pumpkin gets so big it rips them back out? I burried the end so if it rips out the main Ill have the other end to hold it. So how far up towards the pumpkin should I bury the vines? Danielle

you can bury the vines till the cows come home, but when your pumper starts getting big you must un bury, and cut tap roots so you do not stress your stem. Keep a sharp eye on this, VERY important
