Has anyone ever done this due to more rapid fruit growth of the 2ndary fruit growing much faster then the main?
i have a fruit on the 2nd secondary vine from the stump that is growing much faster then my main fruit set 12' out.
i know it is normal for the 2ndary fruit to grow faster as first and the main fruit to grow better later in the season though....???

I grew a 1016 on a secondary vine in 1997 when my main vine had problems. We no longer look at which one is growing faster - slow and steady wins the race! We like to keep the main vine pumpkin and look at the cross we made, the shape of the pumpkin, position on vine etc. We think that the main vine supports the giants better. When a main vine breaks or has problems then we will train a secondary vine as we would have the main vine then we will set a pumpkin on it. Sherry

Way back in 1991 we grew a 675 pounder on a side vine because the fruit on the main would keep rotting. We try to keep the primary fruit on the main vine in most cases but this year we have a primary growing on a side vine so we'll see how that one does in about 2 months ... if it does not float away after all the rain we had recently...
