Jeremy..they work ok BUT...as the sun moves and the pumpkin grows they don't cover the whole fruit throughout the day. Umbrellas work well when they are small.. after that either a shade structure or white sheets works better

Ditto. You need a really big umbrella to cover a 1000 pounder, lol.

Is a towel okay? By covering pumpkin, does this detract from growth of pumpkin or does all growth come through leaves?

We just use sheets to cover the pumpkins. We put laundry baskets over them until they outgrow them. That protects them from the crows that like to peck the young ones. Then we just use sheets and add blankets as it gets colder in the fall.
Another problem with umbrellas - if the wind blows it onto your pumpkin it could damage it. Sherry LaRue

but white sheets dont protect a pumpkin from wetness, so that is why i am trying to avoid the sheet thing

I have used the sheets for years, them getting wet doesn't seem to be a proublem.

Watch that umbrellas don't blow over damaging the fruit.

I use umbrellas and white sheets for shading. Mostly the umbrella is to keep the fruit dry.
