curious as to how others are doing with the heat and humidity from mid states out to northern new england?
we have had several large pumpkins just slow to a crawl and one that aborted at a size we have never seen before.
quite possibly the long run of heat and humidity has taken a toll?
thank god we went with extra plants this year. looks like a 50 percent success rate is quite possible this year in little rhody

The heat and humidity may have caused me to loose my 1385 stump and its biggest pumpkin to blossum end rot so now I am left with a 14 day old and way behind on the plant.

We aren't really humid (we're so used to being dry that 20-30% humidity makes us melt here) but hot hot hot and no rain and sustained winds makes for difficult to keep stuff green. I may have a BIT of subsurface moisture built up and the water bills to prove it. I'm sure it's translating to slower growth than I'd like as my fruits get any size...

ItZ been one of Colorado's driest years ever, 6" below normal rain fall, we have only had 3".....Sustained 90-98 temps.....SO far the only plant we have had issue with aborts is the 848 McKenzie but only off the main......We are sure hoping for some rain and humidity......We are losing leaves due to hot sunbut the plants are doing well.......We Got a BIG One growing here Swen.........lol

Humidity is definitely a problem here: 30" of rain in 3 months. It hasn't been too hot, but we did have one day last week close to 90 and had some leaf wilting. Actually the early part of the growing season was way too cold.

Whoa... The wallace's are losing pumpkins. That can't be good. By the way pap how big are your pumpkins ??? I had a pumpkin that was 33" CC on day 10 ( i'm a second year grower) and it was on the mark to 1300 pounds. I grew her off the 971 Jutras and pollinated her with the 1086 Rodonis on july 5th and i went out to check on her on the 20th And there it was a dime size blossm end split. When i cut her open the walls were only HALF an inch thick.I also lost 2 of my 4 plants . Pap hope those pumpkins speed up for you and ron. Good luck All !!

Long run of heat and humidity, sounds like growing pumpkins in the south....

2 years ago we had a streak of 95-102 here in WI. I lost every single growing tip and it was about the 15th of July. That hurt. Mother nature is tough sometimes...or lots of times that's for sure. Wind / hail / bugs / disease.

it takes more of a toll on my motivation to get out there and pull weeds than it does the plants. they seem happy with the weather lately.

Here in Iowa I have always found the the pumpkins grow best when it is hot and humid. Been cool, and wet this year though.

I'm just a new guy, but my plants seem to be doing much better when we are up in the 90's and tons of humidity, as for setting the little guys all I can do is put a chair over them to help keep them cool when the are little, this year I can't get down there to pollinate by hand, I have 2 plants that have some nice keepers 45" and oh about 30" and another 2 that I am growing about 5-7 pumpkins on each (looking for some nice jack-o's) all on those pumpkins are about mini basket ball size. But like I said I'm a new guy and I really don't know what I'm doing.

I agree with Mike, Usely when hot & humid they grow the most ! Hot & dry they wilt more & probly not grow as much durring daytime,A few yrs ago we had 47 days of over 100* everyday! & some at 113* plants got hammered but pumpkins still grew good ! It changed to cold when they were hitting the 30 day mark, ,(Not cool) but cold for a few days pumpkins stoped growing & didnt recover ,i ended with 824, Heat wont stop them but if it suddenly gets cold the shock will !

Its been very cool here the past 4 days (low 70's) and that has slowed growth quite a bit. It is 89 degrees today with mid to upper 80's expected for the next week. Hopefully this will get things moving again.

We have had so much heat here that I am really tired of weeding, with all the water I am using for pumpkins, the weeds just sprout right back up. I think I have more weeds then plants though lol

I'm a first time grower in Atlanta, GA. I have a pumpkin that is 66" around and is about 30 days old. Today I found some spots on my main vine that are rotten! Is there anything I can do to save the vine? Adjacent secondary vines are rotting too. Too much water? Too much heat/humidity? I had put a layer of sand under the pumpkin and had covered the vine. I later removed the sand and wonder if that caused it to rot.

Hey Pap, I lost my fair pumpkin at around 140 ott, heart breaking but my own fault trying to get it into the perfect position.I set another on a side vine it was 65" ott at day 7, all vines are dead headed full house at 720 sq ft. Most likely will blow with all that mature vine pushing it, but hope not.

I'm with Mike as well. Three really packed on the inches until Tuesday morning's storm and subsequent high pressure.
But we're fighting other things such as the loss of main vines on three plants. Starting to look like 50% here too pap.

I'm going to get a tattoo that says "Born to Weed" pretty soon. I've gotten used to the idea that I can weed in 95F as long as the usual 25mph is whipping by, the humidity is in single digits, I have my hat on (sunburn on my head is NO fun), and I am resigned to I will sweat that white tee to soggy disgusting. We are under the driest year on record so far here, which is under the dustbowl years. My water bill is past alarming-no subsurface moisture so guess how it gets there, but so far they're all taking 95-105 and more... I'm losing a few leaves but that's okay.
