Anyone hear of injecting milk into the vines???? My nieghbor came over today after watching me in the patch everyday realizing what I was doing and told me he used to inject his pumkins with fresh milk from the farm to get huge results. Now, hes up there in age and I was wondering if this was just an old wives tale and wouldnt that take a toll in the vein poking it full of holes?? He said to do it once a week and the holes would heal. I dont know?????? Danielle

Joe P. did that in Lord of the gourdes. He had an introvenous setup. He decided at the price of milk it was not worth it. He is better off spraying it all over the leaves once in a while to hold off powdery mildew. You are much better off with soluable fish and seaweed for July.

The first "got milk" commercial was filmed in a pumpkin patch, over the years its has been miscombobulated, misconstrudled, alot of pumpkin growers drink milk. he he he

I've never seen Lord of the Gourds. Several non-pumpkin growers have told me about it some and, of course, they all have to tell you about the guy injecting milk into his plants. Then they always tell me I should do that. So Joe Pukos is the one doing this? Did he do it as a joke? Dose someone know the story behind this?

I have lourdes of the gourdes and Ill have to watch again. I dont remember the milk part. I just wanted to see what you guys think before I take this guy seriously. As for a needle I have a basting one for a turkey thats pretty small. Mabey I should try it. We have a local farm that sells whole milk straight from the cow for $1.99 a gal. Cheeper than fish and I have 6 pumkins now and I can experiment. Worth a shot anyways right? Danielle

Sorry, bad joke. No injecting milk. Joe Pukos was having some fun on the video. Injecting milk will only get you a pumpkin filled with milk that will soon die. You can dilute milk and use it to keep away powdery mildew.

Yes and I did all my own stunts in Lords of the Gourd too, lol! The milk injecting scene was done only because that’s what the director wanted to do. That fruit had already gone down, so I didn’t mind movie makers sticking needles in it. So no, like pap says, we don’t go around injecting milk into our pumpkins. Lots of organic stuff in the soil and lots of water and taking really good care of the plant will grow some pretty big pumpkins. Joe P.

This rumor has been going on since the beginning of time, or at least since we started growing giant pumpkins. The only way to "squash" these rumors is to ask your neighbor (or whoever else claims to do it) what their largest pumpkin WAS using this method. I also have a neighbor who claims to have grown a 1400# pumpkin YEARS before anyone had broken the 1000# barrier. Only thing is he has no proof, no seeds, no pictures, and no longer does gardening! Hey Joe, How you doin?
