How long does a pumpkin need to be on the vine to have mature seeds for next growing season? I remember seeing something like 40-50 days or 50-60 days on here before, but, of course, I didn't write it down....
Thanks, Mark G.

I cut one off at about 25 days (can't remember exact) and let it sit in the shed for a month. Some of the seeds grew very nice looking plants.

I got an experiment, a 15 day cull. I pulled some full sized plump seeds from the stem end and they're drying now. It WAS a 1018 Langevin x 1009 Young that got rashed by some leaves and burnt by a tarp collapse... I posted pics and will keep you informed.

It depends on which part of the country you live. East coasters with warms days and nights have pumpkins that mature faster than us Pacific Northwesterners. It has been my experience that viable seeds are not produced until the third week in August.....and sometimes not even by then!

Just to be sure...Stan believes it's not only time on the vine but also a certain temperture has to be reached for the seed to become viable...Does the west coast shoot for that first week of July as a Magic Date...Chris's point is even if removed early and allowed to mature in the garage seeds may become viable...Which leads me to this question..I know that we weigh these monsters early October and can't wait to count the seeds...is it possible that allowing the seeds to stay in "house" longer may give out more vibrant, more mature seeds..I know little Jacks left on there own throw more pumpkins then any package seeds I've bought..

Yes...we all shoot for the first week in July. Sometimes out to July 10th It isn't that I haven't tried to germinate seeds from a splitter...they just don't germinate if split before August 21st.
