Ok, here is my situation:

http://bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=89448

1. hole goes through for sure
2. patched with silicon, but don't expect too much more from it
3. last 5 days of growth were about (not in front of me) 9, 12, 19, 15, 18 pounds
4. just started irrigation due to the rain letting up
5. have only sprayed calcimax twice this season, which I know is bad (should be every other day, and will be from now on

I still think that this may have been destined to happen though, look at how thin the end is:

I guess I should get a tissue test done.

Anyhow, what, if anything, can be done for myself and others in the future to prevent this....or in this case, was it not preventable at all.

First off it's not too late to pollinate another.

If you want to grow it out you can silicone and grow it till the end ASSUMING you have already caulked. If not air is getting in there and it will probably be starting to rot very soon.

I grew a pumpkin 400 MORE pounds after caulking 2 years ago, but you have to stay on the caulk. No air in the fruit.

I made another post above. I am not giving up yet, I am pollinating another tomorrow, which I am lucky to have. I will try to leave this on as long as I can as well for the seeds.

I have already caulked it (and will continue to keep it closed up), but the hole was open at least all night, maybe a good part of yesterday too. I was under the impression that any air inside spells disaster, but we will see.

Its done for. If you leave it on theres a good chance the plant will abort others done the line.....cut it off and start over. There's time.

I grew a Hester 582 that split at about 800 pounds. I caulked that split as well as one or two others, and it continued to grow for another 3 or 4 weeks and ended up as a 1240(est)(dmg), so spliting doesn't always finish them off. Of course, it's no good for competition, and it's not too late, so pollinate another and cull the split gourd.

I agree Glenn. Its already off. I have a replacement opening tomorrow, but its going to be 90+ outside, so now I have to fight against that.

All part of the game I guess.

Thanks everyone.
