So I finally had a couple good sets (heehee), one was heading toward the 1000lb'er mark, pretty as can be. I came home a few nights ago and watered out of the rain barrels with my $50 pump and 100' of hose. Today all the plants are dead. Dead. In hind sight, I noticed a big empty jug of round up in my neighbors lawn that night, but didn't put two and two together, they were out of town. I think someone dumped the roundup in my rain barrels! Before you write all the sorry for you Bob stuff, I here by declare to let the sand bagging begin! Luck to all of you, let's have fun.

Wow, there is some weird stuff going on in the pumpkin patches of Big Pumpkin members. Last night I got home from work at about 1 AM and thought I'd spray the patch with some NutriCal. I filled the tank and went to spraying. After about an hour I was done spraying the patch, hot, sweaty and tired. I thought I'd sit down and have a beer and a cigar. It seemed like a strange time to start a new drinking and smoking habit, but this pumpkin growing stuff is stressful. So I cracked open two ice cold wide mouth pounders, I like the wide mouths because the beer just doesn't come out of the regular can fast enough for me. Then I lit the cigar and tossed the match aside. To my great surprise, "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF", the patch went up in a great ball of fire. After I got my vision back I discoverd what I had done. I sprayed the whole patch down in Napalm. What I learned from this is that next season I won't store the jugs of Napalm next to the jugs of NutriCal, even if that is how they go when put in alphabetical order. True story.

Amazing huh? Luckily yesterday my uncle hauled me a load of sand in his dump truck. Sand works great to put out a fire. I think if the sand had been loose instead of in those bags I could have had it out in time to save the 1385. Oh well next year..............

You know, I've been trying desperately to get a pollination to take, so far 0 for 18, the only thing I'm doing different is, I ran out of baggies, so I thought, why not and I used a condom, DOH

Ah come on Doug, really? Not like we've had floods, and hail, and tornados and such, not to mention the bugs and late season start and new early weigh off day in Stillwater (I'd say Thanks Joe, but I heard his patch is a mess, (UNLESS HE IS BAGGING). My patch is great, nothing like 44% Admire this year for sure! The twins stopped growing because they were in the patch alot, but what the heck, food is spendy now too so I'm two up now. The dog died also, not sure what that was about, and the cats are huge. Still trying to figure things out here, dogs, cats, twins, storms, fish, ahh hell I'm tired but so be it. Jeez, I left a cig going out there in the patch, gotta run!

Ice, which type did you use? The females respond better to different types of condoms depending on their size and number of lobes. OMG, this is going no where fast....

Joe,
I'm still hopeful, just not quite so much LOL. Some of the MN growers are sure quite this year, might be some surprises coming out of the state?

I had 14 pumpkins on the 555 Janicek, then I terminated the side vines on both outside sides of both plants, I have limited room. Means nothing but it is a record for me, no sandbagging.

Joe's patch is a mess...seriously (no bagging...or very little). I'm working DESPERATELY while he's on vacation to whip it into shape. He does have fruit set on all plants though.

Trying to keep up to 18 plants isn't that much fun....if my pumpkins weren't sticking way up above the leaves I wouldn't even know they were out there. Can't remember the last time I was in my own patch!

Was it hail a week or two back that got Joe's? It's been hit or miss for sure, I got it last Thurs but only pea sized. Now today and tomorrow may be worth watching, I drove some 100' metal poles into my patch in hopes of lightening to bump up the nitrogen a bit. And who by chance is the unkown sandbagger? Hummmm....

Joe was hit with I believe a single down draft (10 seconds or less and no hail). It literally flattened just about all his leaves. MOST didn't break, just kinked so they now are still green and living, but not standing up. 90% of new growth looks great. Lost shingles and siding in the deal too.

I came home from vacation to find someone was buiding condos in my backyard right in the middle of the patch. They already poured the foundataions so I cannot save the plants. I think the concrete killed all the roots. Now I have to start over 50 miles away. Do I still have time to germinate and make the weighoff?

Rob, don't sweat it. We all know how resilient these plants are, give it a couple weeks and I bet they push right up thru the cement. You have great weather protection with the condo to boot!

Things have been going good until last night. We had hail about as wide as a nickel. I couldn't beleive the size of it.It came down heavy for a while, the quit just as quick. Only had leaf damage. Thank god I had my pumpkins covered good and all my vines buried.

pap, what type of basket ball? We had NHL hockey puck hail today, glad I was in the net. Wow, I'm tired now, long game. The patch got hit by lightening, guess I better not fert this eve. The one that is est measuring 2000lb+ put on 27" after the lightening strike, I knew that would work. Cheers.....Bob
