I have 2 vines that have a yellow substance coming out of them......does any one know what this is and is it treatable? Last week the leaves were wilted, them seemed to come out of it, and now they are wilted again, and that's when I noticed the yellow substance.

Is it a saw dust consistency? You say it is coming out of the vine, is there a hole there? Could be the dreaded borer!

I wouldn't say it could be. It is for SURE. Get those things outta there.

How do I get them out, and is there anything I should spray on my good vines to keep them off?

Sounds like the dreaded SVB... VTJohn gave me this recipe.. 1/8 teaspoon Merit 75% and 1/2 oz Talstar per gallon (WEAR PAINT VAPOR RESPIRATOR and protective gear when mixing and handling) and spray in the last two hours before sunset. Spray tops and bottoms of leaves, spray ground especially near stump. Avoid set fruit and the last 5" of any growing tip. In early morning water to get the Merit into the ground to be taken up. Repeat every 10 days.

I've had a few chomps but no wilties and no 'frass' (that sawdusty stuff). And I have smushed SVB adults.

You can slit stems and get the grubs out though the Merit will be taken up by the plant and kill the grubs. If you use these chemicals you can no longer eat the pumpkin, the flowers, or the seeds. You can grow the seeds...

Thanks for the tip OkieGal.....can these chemicals be purchased at Lowes?

Listen to Okie. You can't buy Merit 75 at Lowes, but you can buy Bayer Tree and Shrub with 1.47% imidacloprid, just change the application rate. I use 1/4 oz. per gallon of talstar (but since you already have the SVB problem, go with 1/2 oz.) and 2 tbsp per gallon of bayer.

Someone else may be able to give a different application rate for the Bayer, I just started using it, but I think that rate is fine.

Oh, if you are mixing talstar and merit, you don't need to water it in, since you are applying it foliarly.

If you make a couple gallons of merit and water the roots, then you should water it in.

This year I have been spraying, and so far no frass on my AGs, but I gots me a plan in waiting, just in case.

All I am using for pest control is Ortho-Max from Walmart.

But, I also got a lot of syringes, and 1.5" 18g needles handy too.

I have experimented this on my Hubbards, that did get hit, and they recovered fast.

I actually drew up and inject 3ml of Ortho-Max into the vine, throught the "frass hole", and 2" above and blellow, anywhere that I see frass as well. Maxima vines are hollow, and take the shots well. Plant seemed to tollerate it just fine as well.

Whats good for the Hubbard is good for the AG.

Killed the sh*t out of the damned bugs too. >;D
