Would folks be willing to give me a rundown of material optionsto put under the pumpkins and advantages/disadvntages of each?

Pulp mill fabric aka mill belting. 1-2" of builders sand molded into a saucer shape, 1" of mason sand (or play sand), then the mill fabric with a couple handfuls of play sand to act like ball bearings.
Easy to move the pumpkin for vine adjustments. Great support for a flat bottom. Great drainage. No mice nesting inside the pumpkins. Looks pretty slick.

Remember to put that fabric slick side up...
It keeps pillbugs coming up from underneath to chomp up your pumpkin too. (I have them like a plague here)
You can reuse the mill fabric for many a season.
