Maybe someone with some experience will chime in and offer some advice. You can also either post in the "New Grower" forum or find a grower near you to mentor you. I think Ron Wallace lives in RI and he grew a world record, maybe he will help you.

Pap, I think duck tape only keeps ducks out, not bees:-)

What a bunch of charactors, just cut the flower off bring it inside and reattach it in the morning with duct tape. I've heard that works well.

pap - save the tape for you mouth. lol. You crack me up and appreciate your comments on the site. I'm coming out from Colorado to the Topsfield Fair this year to see the event. I'm going to have to make sure to say hi when I'm out there.

If you're outta baggies use an unused sweatsock with NO holes in the toe, heel, or body. :)
Really desperate you can wrap a grocery store plastic bag around it and tie a neat bow with the handles by the vine.
:) Orange duct tape works only for hiding 'blems' on the pumpkin. (cracks, where the squirrel chomped it...)
I needed this one too.

NO, definitely not a good idea to use duck tape on your female flowers, if the glue from the back of the tape gets inside the flower it acts as a toxin and could be lethal to your entire plant then spreading to other plants that will end your season. Here's what I would do, id take two pieces of 8 ft angle iron and then put them together over the tip of your female flower, then take a welder(if you don't have one you can rent these) and weld the two pieces together the entire 8ft,top and bottom.(don't want bees to get in) Then the next morning when you get up take your cutting torch or a grinder and cut the angle iron off, and then pollinate. (be careful enough not to throw sparks that could burn holes in your vine or leaves)

I use the ducktape and angle iron method two pieces angle iron 10 feet with duck tape on the ends no welding required elemanates sparkes and burns glue is far enough away will not hurt the plant.

I take nylon stockings or panty hose cut in sections tie off and this fits nice and snug over the flowers. After pollination I tie the female shut with bailing twine. Works great for me. I would try to pollinate before noon or you may have poor results.
