My plant has a stem split that runs into the pumpkin itself. Right now, the wound seems to be healing up fine. Has anyone heard of fruit with damage at this location making it to October?

few if any due and it's a long way away. But never say never. But if you can set a new one due so as a back up.

Stem splits are not always fatal. If the split does not penetrate into the core of the pumpkin you are fine. Take a long piece of grass and gently probe the split into the pumpkin. If you hit something solid you are ok if it keeps on going you have entered the core and the pumpkin will not survive off the vine. I have had stem splits that you can see all the way through to the other side that went into the pumpkin but never opened to the core. These pumpkins lasted well into Halloween. John

I filleted the stem to relieve pressure on the stem of my 125 Wolf in '06 and finished with a new WI state record @1175.5 lbs

I could put my hand through that stem in Oct,,,the trick is to get that stress OFF the stem ASAP or it will prove fatal,,keep it dry as well

Thats the thickest part of the pumpkin right there. I agree with unkaden , keep the stress off it now and you should have no problems.
