While burying my vines I have kept a shallow trench dug in front of my vine. Occasionally I have reached behind myself and scooped a little extra dirt to cover with. I have noticed that if I don't reach 3+ feet beyond the vine tip I may get into some roots. I noticed this quite early on and all the way out to where I terminated the side vines. My assumption is that the stump has a massive root system in ALL directions prior to and after the side vines start to run and send down their roots. With this said and assuming space is not an issue, wouldn't it be better to train the first few secondaries back to more of a butterfly shape. My feeble mind tells me this would better utilize the plant by having the roots of the same number of sides covering a larger area? Other benifits? Problems?

I think what you are describing is sort of like what Pap calls a pitch fork pattern.
