I Have 4 pumpkins set on my 1009 young, 10,13,15 I also have one set on the 1st secondary about 11 out. I am wondering when is it safe to say the fruit is not going to abort? I don't want to cull 3 fruits then get an abort on my last remaining. I have the fruits shaded from the sun.

Also, When is it safe to resume fertilizing, I read fertilizing during the pollination period can cause the fruits to abort?

Thanks for the help!

Not that I have a vested interest in your 1009. LOL But I would take a pumpkin a day off if they are small. If the culls are large (football to basketball) size I would cut the stem of one half way through and finish it the next day.

As far as ferts, I never stop through out the whole pollination process. Just remember to not over feed or water. Consistent moisture and food seem to get us to the size we want. If you have other questions don't hesitate to email me at [email protected]

I'm growing one of his babies too...

If they're bigger than a softball/6 days old, cut the vine half and half like John says... else yeah, I remove one cull a day from a vine when deciding.

John, how come after I'm through setting it's sneaking all those gorgeous PERFECT 6" five lobers at 4' from the stump? I hunt that darling to try to remove those before they bloom...and it's gotten two on me in two days. Must have those stems on a diet and dye job so they don't look like girls... :)

I'd get rid of the one on the secondary first. I use the cut half the stem one day the other half the next day method as well. Usually fruits won't abort once they're over 50" CC. So once the chosen one is over 50" its safe to start hacking the others off.

Thanks alot for the help.

John, your 1009 seed has been a great grower so far for me this year, this thing is a female producing machine. I had a severe main vine snap during a big storm on it at about 16 feet. since the main was terminated this thing has been shooting out females on almost every secondary some secs. have had multiple females on them. I have to pop off females almost everyday on this thing.

Thanks again.
