I've read (or it's been suggested) that addition of too much Potassium and Phosphate can cause premature aging. Is this true? What does this really mean? Is the plant aging or the pumpkin?

your pumpkin ripens faster by adding the high pottasium to early.

I've seen it stop a pumpkin's growth in its tracks when a grower I know tried pushing it a little harder.

One might instead try to give the pumpkin too much vermicompost solids, aerated VC tea, or liquid kelp and fish concentrate as both foliar sprays and/or soil drenches. Too much "chemical" input can have negative results. It's very difficult to over-apply the natural and organic substances.
