My 1014 Holland plant is a great plant, but the first pumpkin at 7 ft died from 113* temps, then the next one at 10 ft was 3 lobes ,& there was no males in patch yet! So the one at 16 ft was the one i was hoping for but it had 3 good lobes one deformed and one with seeds I did pollenate it & it acculy looks good ,, I didnt want to go as far as 19 ft but i then hoped for it to be good & it was except it was 4 lobes, Question is any of the real giants ever grown on 4 lobes

According to AGGC the 1689 was grown on 4 lobes, so yes.

My experience has shown that the ratio of four lobe females compared to five lobes is about 3-1.

There is no conclusive evidence that 4 lobes is any better than 5.

There is *some* evidence that 5 lobes can grow bigger in a smaller patch, however, there is still not enough data to cunclude one way or another, and even if there is a true difference it may not be appreciable, say .05% faster growth on a vine that is .05% smaller.

The 1689 Jutras was a 4 lobe pumpkin. Not only is it the gold ( or salmon orange)standard right now for size, but had very excellent shape, was free of sag lines both external, and internal, and had a high seed count as well.

So I think a 4 lober can do just as well as 5.
