I have several vines usually towards he tips that are breaking. At first glance I thought it might be an svb but the area looks more like breakage than a hole by an insect. Half the vine is cracked around the hole. Any ideas? http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=88034

I have a plant that has ribbon vine that exploded and the top half of the vine rolled up. The plant still seems to be growing well. I tried to unroll and get it to grow back together but it does not appear be sealing or growing back together. Best of luck to you>

Jeff, Welcome to the "Curse of the Broken Vine"! This is the first year in the last five that I have not had a broken tip. The first sign is when the tip begins to curl up to the sky....nearly 90 degrees. I believe that it is due to over feeding....especially certain fertilizers that shall remain nameless.

We had tips explode off and break at the growing tip due to too much nitrogen in our soil.

HI Jeff I have had many explode on me this year. I am thinking(like creekside) the reason it happened to me was to much rain combined with to much nitrogen.(I applied calcium nitrate in the beginning of June.) I have completely cut out the fertilizers for a couple of weeks now and I have not had as many exploding tips. Still to much rain here though.

creekside is right it is most likely from to much nitrogen and make sure you spray for fungus regularly
