Two out of four of my pollinations this year have been 6 lobe. In the past 11 years I have only seen one 6 lobe blossum in my garden and I seem to be batting .500 this year. I was thinking maybe it is the traits of a certain plant but we are seeing it in our 588 from last year, which we had not seen in the past. My conclusion is that there must be some external factor besides plant genetics that contribute to lobe development. Weather, soil? The way I hold my jaw as I sand the seed? Any and all thoughts welcome.

I think the 6 lobe females are due to weather and soil conditions. My experience is the first female may be 6 lobe with the remainder 4 or 5. Most of the fruit tend to become wheel shaped and very tall. The 1689 jutras I pollenated this morning was a 6 lobe female.
